PENSACOLA, Fla. (July 9, 2026) -- For nearly two decades, Pastor Sylvia Tisdale has dedicated her life to serving Pensacola's most vulnerable residents through E-Comfort, the outreach ministry of Epps Christian Center.
Since opening its doors in 2007, E-Comfort has become a place of hope for individuals and families struggling with homelessness, hunger, and hardship. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the organization provides food boxes to those in need and serves hot meals to the homeless each day. In addition, E-Comfort also distributes care bags stocked with hygiene essentials, including soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and toilet paper.
Pastor Sylvia Tisdale's commitment to serving others began with a simple act of kindness.
"The Lord said, 'I want you to feed those guys across the street,'" Tisdale recalled. "Twenty-three able-bodied big guys came across the street and lined up at that door. That touched me so much. It was unimaginable, unexplainable. I couldn't stop."
Nineteen years later, she still hasn't.
In addition to providing meals, E-Comfort also assists individuals with obtaining birth certificates and identification cards, which is often the first step toward accessing healthcare, employment, housing assistance, and disability benefits. Through the resource center, individuals can use computers and receive assistance applying for programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Social Security.
As a funded partner of United Way of West Florida, E-Comfort received $28,300 during the most recent funding cycle, which has greatly supported the needs of their community and helped them to continue providing food and hygiene supplies.
"I thank God that they found favor in us," said Pastor Tisdale. "Because of what we get from United Way of West Florida, we are able to really expand what we are doing. As we get more resources, we can do more."
One of the people directly impacted by that support is Jason. Though funding provided by UWWF, Jason was able to receive critical medication.
"He's able to get his insulin because he got an ID,” said Annie Brown, a volunteer at E-Comfort. He's also now able to get medical care."
Jason has been a recipient of E-Comfort’s support for six weeks and learned about it through word of mouth. Jason is a diabetic who lost his job a year ago due to declining vision.
Brown, a volunteer who has served at E-Comfort for more than two years, played a key role in helping Jason navigate the process. She regularly assists individuals with obtaining birth certificates and identification cards and often goes above and beyond to ensure people receive the help they need.
For Jason, that meant much more than paperwork.
Brown personally drove him to obtain his ID, helped him access healthcare services, and even treated him to his favorite meal at Popeyes afterward.
"At E-Comfort, no one gets turned away," she said.
“Thank God, she helped me get my I.D.” Jason said. “I wouldn’t be able to do anything, not get my medications or anything.”
Pastor Tisdale credits much of E-Comfort's growth and ability to serve the community to partnerships with organizations like UWWF.
"United Way was really the glue that started the progress," she said.
Today, E-Comfort continues to expand its impact. The organization is currently working toward building a warehouse that will allow volunteers to prepare food boxes more efficiently, protect supplies from extreme weather, and better serve the growing number of individuals and families seeking assistance.
"I just know it's going to have a great, great effect on this community," Pastor Tisdale said.
By bringing together community partners and investing in local nonprofits like E-Comfort, UWWF helps mobilize resources that make a lasting difference in people's lives. Whether it's helping someone obtain an ID or access healthcare, UWWF partnerships help turn challenges into opportunities.
Collaborative efforts between community organizations amplifies impact and provides long-term support for those in need. No single agency can do it alone. Through the generosity of donors, local organizations that understand the needs of the community can continue to serve their neighbors and build a stronger, more resilient community.
