UNITED WAY OF WEST FLORIDA ANNOUNCES MINI GRANT AWARDS TO EMPOWER LOCAL NONPROFITS

Pensacola, Fla. – December 4, 2023

The United Way of West Florida is proud to announce the approval of Mini Grant awards for 12 deserving local nonprofits, each receiving up to $5,000, for a total amount of $49,172.00. These one-time grants have been approved by the United Way of West Florida Board of Directors through the Community Investment process, demonstrating a commitment to fortifying the regional nonprofit landscape.

“The Mini Grant programs marks an exciting new chapter for United Way of West Florida,” remarked President/CEO Laura Gilliam. “This funding opportunity is a testament to our dedication to supporting Escambia and Santa Rosa County nonprofits in their quest to bolster their organizations and better serve our communities.”

Gilliam emphasized, “We’re particularly keen on reaching grassroots agencies. Those working tirelessly in marginalized communities, often in hard-to-reach areas with limited resources, hold immense potential to effect positive change. These grants aim to empower such organizations, enabling them to expand their impact and reach.”

The grants serve as a vehicle for these agencies to build capacity, offering a streamlined approach that bypasses the traditional community investment process. By providing this financial boost, United Way of West Florida aims to foster growth and innovation among nonprofits, ultimately leading to enhanced support for those in need.

The Mini Grants are a result of the organization’s newly adopted strategic plan, specifically related to highlighting United Way of West Florida’s commitment to nurturing and strengthening the nonprofit ecosystem, all the while ensuring that these organizations have the resources needed to flourish and continue making a profound difference in the community.

Pensacola, FL – August 20, 2025

On July 24th, Stuff the Bus united the Northwest Florida community in an impactful display of support for local students. Held at six Walmart stores across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, this year’s event raised over $78,000 in donations and sponsorships. It also collected enough supplies for every school in both counties, ensuring students are equipped for a successful year.

“Stuff the Bus is a powerful reminder of what our community can accomplish when we unite together for a shared purpose” said Laura Gilliam, President and CEO of United Way of West Florida, “At United Way of West Florida, we believe every child deserves the tools to thrive-and today, we made that possible through the generosity of our donors, volunteers, and partners.”

More than 300 volunteers across both counties came together to collect and organize donated supplies, contributing over 1,000 hours of service. Their efforts reflect the compassion and spirit that define our community.

The United Way of West Florida is proud to partner annually with Escambia County Public Schools (ECPS), Santa Rosa County District Schools (SRCDS), Cat Country 98.7, News Radio 92.3 & 1620, Pensacola News Journal, and WEAR Cares to make this event possible.

Stuff the Bus is part of United Way of West Florida’s broader commitment to expanding youth opportunity. Through the Healthy Schools Escambia program, we support students year-round by addressing critical academic and health related barriers to success. Stuff the Bus helps ensure classrooms are fully stocked with the supplies students need to learn and Healthy Schools Escambia brings essential services directly to the schools. Together, these initiatives help create learning environments where every child can thrive – academically, physically, and emotionally.

“I see firsthand how the supplies from Stuff the Bus immediately relieve stress for both the teachers and families,” Jessica Johnson, Healthy Schools Escambia coordinator at United Way of West Florida. “When students walk into a classroom with everything, they need it sets a positive tone for the entire school year. It helps build confidence, increases engagement, and removes one more barrier to learning."

Parents and students in need of supplies should contact their or school or district office for distribution details.

We extend heartfelt thanks to this year’s Stuff the Bus sponsors, whose support is vital to making this event a continued success:

Pensacola, FL, September 5, 2025

United Way of West Florida (UWWF) hosted its Annual Celebration today at Sanders Beach Corrine Jones Resource Center, celebrating 101 years of service. The “Back to the Future” themed event highlighted the organization’s impact in 2024, recognized community partners and supporters, and outlined an inspiring vision for continued growth and innovation in 2025 and beyond.

“As we entered our 101st year of service to the community, the United Way of West Florida team did what we always do – we showed up,” said Laura Gilliam, CEO of UWWF. “Our staff shows up every day to help people thrive. Our board shows up to provide the strategic direction and support needed to maximize impact. And our community showed up – volunteers and donors whose time and financial contributions make all this possible.”

In 2024, United Way of West Florida made measurable progress toward improving lives in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Nearly 20,000 community members were served through agency program investments. 87% of youth graduated from high school time. 71% of individuals increased their disposable income. 84% maintained or improved their emotional, mental, and/or physical health.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA): 1,181 total returns filed, helping local families access nearly $1.3 million in refunds. 433 individuals volunteered for Stuff the Bus, providing 982 hours of service, collecting more than $76,000 in school supply donations, helping local students start the year ready to learn. 743 volunteers contributed 2,939 service hours to Day of Caring for an estimated $93,460 in community impact value. 211 Northwest Florida handled 23,371 calls, including 9,281 through the Florida Veterans Support Line and 988 mental health crisis calls, providing rapid, tailored support and connecting thousands with critical resources.

Many households UWWF serves are part of the ALICE population – Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These families are employed and work hard but still struggle to make ends meet. Increasingly, these households are reaching out for essentials like food, rent, and utility assistance. UWWF remains dedicated to expanding resources and creating new support opportunities for ALICE families in 2025.

The Annual Meeting also marked a significant leadership transition for United Way of West Florida’s Board of Directors. Outgoing Board Chair Todd L Philips reflected on his service with gratitude.

“Serving on the United Way of West Florida Board has been an honor,” he said. “Over the past nine years, I’ve witnessed the dedication of staff, volunteers, and partners who show up every day to make a difference. As I step away from my role as Chair, I do so with pride in what we’ve accomplished together and confidence in the team’s ability to build an even brighter future.”

Incoming Board Chair Bryan Wyer shared an inspiring vision for the year ahead.

“I am honored to continue United Way’s legacy of service and impact,” he said. “The strength of this organization comes from the collective power of staff, board members, volunteers, and donors working together to support families and build stronger communities. Looking forward, I’m excited to expand resources for ALICE households and continue driving lasting change in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.”

In 2025 and beyond, UWWF remains committed to building on its rich legacy by empowering communities, fostering lasting partnerships, and inspiring greater engagement.
