Wilson’s Heart for Giving
As we celebrate National Volunteer Week (April 19–26), United Way of West Florida is excited to share stories of the amazing people who help us. Today, we are highlighting Gwen Wilson. Gwen is a dedicated volunteer who loves helping our community and participating in our annual Day of Caring.
For Gwen, volunteering is more than just a job. It is her way of living out the "Golden Rule" (treating others how you want to be treated) every single day.
Helping Others Because She Understands
Gwen’s desire to help comes from her own life. She grew up in a home with a lot of love and faith, but her family didn't have much money. Because of this, she knows what it feels like to be in need.
"I know what it feels like to need more," Gwen says. "We were taught to take care of those in need. Today, I am lucky that I have what I need, so I can help meet the needs of others."
This motivates her to show up for her neighbors. Whether she is sorting food, running a donation drive, or doing yard work, Gwen’s goal is simple: to bring others a little bit of joy.
The Reward of Playing a "Small Role"
The Day of Caring helps many local groups that provide food, clothes, and help to people in West Florida. The work is often hard and physical, but Gwen finds it very rewarding.
"The reward is the joy of playing a small role in helping," Gwen explains. She believes that every person who helps makes it easier for these important groups to keep doing their life-changing work.
Gwen’s Advice: Your Time is Powerful
If you have ever thought about volunteering but haven’t tried it yet, Gwen has a simple message: Sign up!
"You will never understand the joy of giving back until you do it," she says. "All it takes to make a difference is an investment of your time."
