Woman painting a piece of cake

A Sweet Evening of Impact

On February 9, 2026, more than 30 remarkable women gathered for an evening filled with creativity, connection, and community purpose. Hosted by Women United, the dynamic donor network of United Way of West Florida, this gathering celebrated the power of women leading with heart and making a tangible difference across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties—especially for families and individuals in the ALICE population.

The event took place at The Makery, where women from across industries and walks of life came together after hours to share ideas, build relationships, and explore meaningful ways to give back to the community.

“There is a unique energy when women come together with a shared heart for service,” said Jodi Bell, Women United Co-chair. “It was a wonderful evening of connection, creativity, and meaningful conversation about how we can show up for the ALICE population in our community.”

Before the cake decorating began, attendees broke the ice with dessert-themed bingo—learning about each other’s favorite sweet treats, who enjoys baking in their spare time, and even who has competed in a pie-eating contest! These playful conversations quickly turned into deeper reflections on community involvement and the essential role women play in strengthening local networks.

Learning and Leading for Community Impact

After the networking game, the group heard from Laura Gilliam, President and CEO of United Way of West Florida, about the organization’s work and how Women United members can engage with programs and services that create lasting change. “Helping people find ways to improve the lives of their neighbors, colleagues, friends, and family is one of the things I love about United Way,” Gilliam shared, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in tackling community challenges. “When women bring their energy, influence, and resources together, we become an unstoppable force for positive change.”

The evening continued with a powerful discussion led by Lauren Meadors, United Way’s Director of Development, about the ALICE population—those Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed individuals and families who earn too much to qualify for federal assistance yet still struggle to make ends meet. These hardworking residents are often just one missed paycheck away from financial crisis. Women United’s mission aligns closely with United Way’s focus on investing in solutions that strengthen financial stability and opportunity for ALICE households.

Cake, Conversation, and Collective Vision

Then came the highlight of the night: cake painting—with purpose. The cake served as a metaphor for the community and its needs, while the icing symbolized services and support that help uplift those who are ALICE. Women were given a blank “canvas” and a palette of icing colors, and challenged to paint their vision of what it looks like when women unite for impact.

Creativity soared. Some painted hearts to represent compassion. Others drew keys for the doors women open in the community. One painted flames, declaring, “women are on fire!” Even the squiggles carried intention and meaning.

At the end of the hour, attendees shared their creations with pride and enthusiasm. In the spirit of friendly collaboration, they voted on the design that best captured the essence of Women United’s impact—a beautifully piped cake that read “Women United.” A donated wine tasting class at Total Wine added to the celebration and camaraderie.

Why Women United Matters

“Women United represents the kind of impact I want my life to have: lifting others, strengthening families, and building a legacy that lasts,” said Lauren Todavich, Women United Co-chair. “I’m proud to stand among women who turn compassion into action. It isn’t just about serving—it’s about standing shoulder to shoulder with women who believe that families deserve more than survival; they deserve opportunity. When strong women unite, we don’t just change circumstances; we write legacies.”

The evening was made even more special thanks to The Makery, whose owners went above and beyond to support the event, making it a joyful night filled with meaning and connection.
