An Invitation to Do Good with Christian StokesSTB Logo

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week (April 19–26), United Way of West Florida is excited to highlight a young leader who has been a consistent force for good in our community. Today, we’re spotlighting Christian Stokes, a standout volunteer who has dedicated multiple years of service to our annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive.

For Christian, volunteering isn't about checking a box or earning hours—it’s about the "unfathomable" power of a community coming together year after year for the greater good.

Lightening the Load for Families

Christian’s inspiration for returning to Stuff the Bus each year is rooted in a clear understanding of the challenges many families face. He knows that the cost of success in the classroom—backpacks, pencils, and paper—can quickly become a financial burden.

"I know firsthand that school supplies can be rather expensive," Christian shares. "It’s hard for families to be able to afford that, especially the way the economy is. But if we all can get together to help them, it’s enough inspiration for me."

By helping facilitate these donations, Christian is ensuring that every child in our community starts the school year with the tools they need to succeed.

The Reward of Connection

While many volunteers his age are focused on tracking service hours, Christian has spent his years of service focused on something much deeper: the human connection. For him, the simple act of showing up and being present is the ultimate reward.

"For me, just being there is enough of a reward," he says. "I’m not in it for any service hours... I’m there to make a difference and make connections with people in this community."

An Invitation: "Come With Me"

When asked what he would say to someone who has never volunteered for Stuff the Bus, Christian doesn't offer a sales pitch—he offers an invitation. Having seen the impact of the event over several years, he believes that the spirit of the day—where strangers unite to help people they’ve never met—is something that has to be experienced to be understood.

"I would tell someone to 'come with me,'" Christian explains. "It isn’t advice; it’s an invitation to help people for the greater good."

Thank You, Christian!

United Way of West Florida is incredibly proud of Christian Stokes for his multi-year commitment to our mission. Thank you, Christian, for your heart for service and for consistently inviting others to join the movement!
